Man, I don’t know what is up with girls these days. It used to be a whole lot simpler back in elementary school. The deal was, if you were the fastest runner in your class, you got all the girls.

And in the fifth grade, the fastest runner was Ronnie McCoy.

a whole lot 非常,很多

英文解释:very much or a great deal

e.g. It will make your work a whole lot easier.

Understand that this is going to happen a whole lot sooner than you think.

英文解释:an agreement or arrangement

Nowadays, it’s a whole lot more complicated. Now it’s about the kind of clothes you wear or how rich you are or if you have a cute butt or whatever. And kids like Ronnie McCoy are scratching their heads wondering what the heck happened.

If you scratch yourself, you rub your fingernails against your skin because it is itching

e.g. I had to scratch my head to remember his name.

what the heck happened

The most popular boy in my grade is Bryce Anderson. The thing that really stinks is that I have always been into girls, but kids like Bryce have only come around in the last couple of years.

I remember how Bryce used to act back in elementary school.

If you say that something stinks, you mean that you disapprove of it because it involves ideas, feelings, or practices that you do not like.

e.g. I think their methods stink.

e.g. We have had a couple of good meetings this week and we couldn't wait for this game to come around.

If someone acts in a particular way, they behave in that way.

e.g. He acted as if he hadn't heard any of it.

But of course now I don’t get any credit for sticking with the girls all this time.

Like I said, Bryce is the most popular kid in our grade, so that leaves all the rest of us guys scrambling for the other spots.

If you get the credit for something good, people praise you because you are responsible for it, or are thought to be responsible for it.

e.g. We don't mind who gets the credit so long as we don't get the blame.

comment:to get the credit for [something]/doing [something]因某事物/做某事得到称赞

stick with sb.

If you stick with someone, you stay close to them.

comment:stick with sth.

scramble for sth.

If a number of people scramble for something, they compete energetically with each other for it.

e.g. More than three million fans are expected to scramble for tickets...

英文解释:a position in a list of things or in a competition

1)Someone's rank is the position or grade that they have in an organization. 2)Someone's rank is the social class, especially the high social class, that they belong to.

The best I can figure is that I’m somewhere around 52nd or 53rd most popular this year. But the good news is that I’m about to move up one spot because Charlie Davies is above me, and he’s getting his braces next week.

A brace is a metal device that canbe fastened to a child's teeth in order to help them grow straight.
