《A Farewell to Arms 》的前四章是一个序幕，主要给读者展现了当时的历史环境和两个主角的人物背景，所以我就来谈谈对这三方面的简单印象吧。

        迷雾，隆冬，暴雪，闪电，黑夜，这些意象编织出了一篇浓厚压抑残酷恐惧的战争情绪。放眼望去的自然景观中无法忽视的哪些军事设施和满天飞扬的尘土，时刻在把人们从郊外的现世温馨中拉扯出来。

         严寒纵使可怕，但更可怕的是人们对死亡的麻木。7000条生命也能用上only一词，可见在战役里死亡的，更是不计其数吧。即便是看远山，脑中蹦出的也全都是占领、攻占这些词汇——在军中，人们已经习惯用战争的视角来感受这个世界了。

在这样的严酷环境中，军人们依靠这荤段子和黄色书籍来感受自己心脏的跳动——性的直接刺激才能让他们感觉自己还是活着的。在战争氛围中，神还有什么用呢？如果神是有用的话，他当会庇护自己的子民远离战争吧。所以这些军人们肆无忌惮地拿牧师开下流的玩笑，牧师也不恼，反过来看能作为他们减压的对象，也算是“渡人一程”了吧。在这样的麻木中，还能有爱么？有！这个故事讲述的正是一段爱情故事，这不禁让人期待加倍。

男女主角的相遇是经典的狗血套路：我配朋友去”相亲”，结果我遇到了真命天女，而朋友勾搭上他人。

女主又是一个在战争中失去所爱的女人，而且是青梅竹马的恋人。青梅竹马的感情大概在海明威严重是最最纯粹的吧。我不禁怀疑海明威是否偏爱“丧偶”的女子。但我相信这不是什么个人的偏好。有人说海明威的故事里有一个“准则英雄”的概念，而这样的英雄往往是通过死亡来产生的。我想这个“恋人去世”的情节以及这些女性角色对这个恋人的态度应当是海明威对她们内心的一种阐明：这个女子是偏爱英雄的，她是被英雄气质所吸引的。这是男女主角能走到一起的先决条件，也是后面悲剧产生的原因。

而男主看起来是一个对事比较稳重，保守，不是特别有热情的军人。虽然他口中喊着荣誉的口号，但他总是想着战争结束的事情。他深夜梦回对战争对黑夜的恐惧，让我想起李安《比利林恩的中场战事》里的情节。（我想海明威的作品在一定程度上对李安的创作有一些影响）在《太阳照常升起》中的JAKE也是这样的一种性格。我觉得他们和文章里沉浸其中的其他人物有一点不一样，他们是相对冷静和抽离的。我猜测这和海明威是作为战地记者参与战争有关，因为新闻是需要有客观性的。
