The Vanishing Glass(消失的玻璃）
转眼间，哈利在阿姨家住过了十个年头，但是Private Drive街区依旧，没什么变化。
The sun rose on the same tidy front gardens and lit up the brass number four on the Dursleys’ front door;it crept into their living-room，which was almost exactly the same as it had been on the night when Mr Dursley had seen that fateful news about the owls.
Only photographs on the mantelpiece really show how much time had passed.
通过太阳升起这个场景的描写以及壁橱上照片的景物描写，一幅生活场景马上被勾勒出来。太阳缓缓升起，日光照在Dursleys家门前的草坪上，连门上的门牌号也被照的发光，一切都如此一样又平静，只有屋里壁橱上的照片能显示这十年过去的痕迹。
小时候Dudley长什么样呢？
There had been lots of pictures of what’s looked like a large pink beach ball wearing different-colored bobble hats-but Dudley Dursley was no longer a baby, and now the photographs showed a large,blond boy riding his first bicycle,on a roundabout at the fair,playing computer game with his father,being hugged and kissed by his mother.
Dudley looked a lot like Uncle Vernon.He had a large,pink face,not much neck,small,watery blue eyes and thick,blond hair that lay smoothly on his thick,fat head.
胖胖的Dudley，长得好看但脾气真的是火爆，都是被爸妈惯坏的。
看到礼物有36个，少了两个，看他的反应：
“All right，thirty-seven then,”said Dudley,going red in the face.Harry, who could see a huge Dudley tantrum coming on,began wolfing down his bacon as fast as possible in case Dudley turned the table over.
Aunt Petunia obviously scented danger.
当听到妈妈说再给他买两个的时候，他就瞬间开心起来,开始拆礼物：
“Oh.”Dudley sat down heavily and grabbed the nearest parcel（包裹），ripped the paper off (拆快递）a gold wristwatch.
这样的表现还得到了爸爸的夸奖,真的蠢的什么都能夸，什么都是优点：
“Little tyke wants his money’s worth,just like his father.Atta boy, Dudley!”He ruffled Dudley’s hair.
那我们的主人公哈利呢？
The room held no sign at all that another boy lived in the house,too.
哈利的姨妈声音总是那么的刻薄，你看新的一天就是这样开始的：
Her shrill voice which made the first noise of the day.She rapped on the door again with screeched.“Are you up yet?”She demanded.
demand 这种用法还是第一次看到，之前都是说需求，比如说我国是人口大国，对粮食，石油等资源有大量的需求。
“Nearly”，said Harry。（有一种放假在家被妈妈三番五次喊起床的即视感，马上就能体验到了朋友们）
Harry groaned.(小声咕哝，也作呻吟）
没办法，哈利是个受气桶。你看他住的环境：
Harry got slowly out of bed and started looking for socks. He found a pair under his bed and,after pulling a spider off one of them,put them on.Harry was used to spiders,because the cupboard under the stairs was full of them,and that was where he slept.
楼梯间下边的小黑屋，是的你没看错。还经常作为受气包，被Dudley揍。不过哈利还是有机会去上学，这是唯一一件好事吧，除了下边要讲到的意外，哈利今年可以跟他们一起给Dudley过生日。
看看可恶的Dudley：
Exactly why Dudley wanted a racing bike was a mister to Harry,as Dudley was very fat and hated exercise-unless of course it involved punching somebody.Dudley’s favourite punch-bag was Harry.
我们的哈利也很机灵,也弱小的可怜人：
But he could often catch him.He didn’t look it,but he was very fast.Perhaps it had something to do with living in a dark cupboard,but Harry had always been small and skinny for his age.
现在的小哈利长什么样了呢？
Harry had a thin face,knobby knees（怎么翻译呢？）,black hair and brighten-green eyes.He wore round glasses held together with a lot of Sellotape because of all the times Dudley had punched him on the nose.The only thing Harry liked about his own appearance was a very thin scar on his forehead which was shaped like a bolt of lightening.
哈利从被叫醒开始他的一天，他翻了个身(还记得上一节Dursley先生翻身嘛？turn over）想记住昨天的好梦：
He rolled on to his back and tried to remember the dream he had been having.It had been a good one.There had been a flying motorbike in it.He had a funny feeling he’d had the same dream before.
其实他早就体验过，还记得第一节海格骑着能飞的摩托把哈利送到这里来吗？（感觉以前做过这个梦，你在生活中是不是也经常遇到这种事，用起来这句话）
吃点饭要出发去动物园了！
Harry put the plates of egg and bacon on the table,which was difficult as there wasn’t much room.
Petunia came back from the telephone,looking both angry and worried.
为什么这么愤怒呢？
“She can’t take him.”She jerked her head in Harry’s direction,looked furiously at Harry as though he’d planned this.
因为朋友没办法帮忙看Harry ，大家都什么反应呢？
Dudley’s mouth fell open in horror but Harry’s heart gave a leap.
他们展开了激烈的讨论，完全忽视哈利的存在：
The Dursleys often spoke about Harry like this, as though he wasn’t there - or rather,as though he was something very nasty that couldn’t understand them,like a slug(鼻涕虫）.
其实哈利自己只想：
Harry put in hopefully(he’d be able to watch what he wanted on television for a change and maybe even have a go on Dudley’s computer).
看看电视，玩玩电脑。
哈利的阿姨什么反应呢？
Aunt Petunia looked as though she’d just swallowed a lemon.
“And come back and find the house in ruins?”She snarled.
阿姨提出让Harry留在车里，Dudley不愿意了：
“That car’s new,he’s not sitting in it alone...”
然后通过小伎俩实现自己的愿望：
Dudley began to cry loudly.In fact,he wasn’t really crying,it had been years since he’d really cried,but he knew that if he screwed up his face and wailed,his mother would give him anything he wanted.
包括后边的假装抽泣：Dudley yelled between huge pretend sobs.
然后又冲Harry坏笑：He shot Harry a nasty grin through the gap in his mother’s arms.
然后他的妈妈就说，我不会让他把你的生日毁掉的：用spoil来表示毁掉，又得到了一个新的用法，以前只是用来表示宠溺、溺爱的意思。
不过最后Harry还是跟他们一块去动物园了，虽然在这之前被叔叔警告了：
“I’m warning you.’He had said,putting his large purple face right up close to Harry’s,“I’m warning you now,boy-any funny business,anything at all-and you’ll be in that cupboard from now until Christmas.”

It was cool and dark in here, with lit windows all along the walls.Behind the glasses,all sorts of lizards and snakes were crawling and slithering over bits of wood and stone.(在木头和石头的间隙）
Dudley看的时候这个样子，但蛇不理他：
Dudley stood with his nose pressed against the glass,staring at the glistening brown coils.
其实对蛇的描写很生动：The snake jerked its head towards Uncle Vernon and Dudley,then raised its eyes to the ceiling.It gave Harry a look that said quite plainly:’I get that all the time.’
The snake jabbed(刺，戳，猛击） it’s tail at a little sign next to the glass. Harry peered at it（带点疑惑，疑问的盯着看）.
最后玻璃消失了：
Harry sat up and gasped;the glass front of the boa constrictor’s tank had vanished.The great snake was uncoiling itself rapidly,slithering out on to the floor-people throughout the reptile house screamed and started running for the exits.

但蛇继续打盹 snooze on
Dudley很失望，于是哼哼唧唧moan，shuffled away，拖着步子失望的离开。再来复习一下Harry的小声咕哝：groan. Harry 和蛇说话的时候小心翼翼地咕哝，murmur
nod vigorously 表示很赞同的点头
