Nowadays, children spend too much time watching TV and playing computer games. Some people believe this has negative effects on children’s mental abilities. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

At present, kids pour time and energy into watching TV and playing computer games. Some hold this adversely affects children’s mental abilities. As for me, I stand up for this argument. It is extremely hazardous for kids to spend too much time on TV and computer games in the long run.
To begin with, watching TV and playing computer games numb children’s mind as they prevent kids from being intellectually challenged, thinking analytically, and using their imagination because they are accustomed to the fast-paced visual stimulation on television or computer screens. According to a scientific study, preschoolers watching cartoons and entertainment television may have poorer pre-reading skills when they attend school. To make matters worse, too much watching TV and playing computer games may be linked to lower brain functioning.
Furthermore, some violent TV programs and computer games may have a detrimental influence on children's mental growth and development. Those who watch a large amount of simulated violence, particularly in video games, can become immune to it and more inclined to act violently. Besides children’s aggressive thoughts, feelings, and behaviors, since some computer games are often played alone, they could also foster social isolation, an immediate consequence of continuous and ceaseless gaming.
More alarmingly, numerous bestselling games in the market only distract children with their flashy animation, which will seriously damage kids’ concentration. Anxiety, insomnia, and depression are also the destructive effects caused by playing too many computer games. Additionally, once kids are addicted to watching TV and playing computer games, they are unwilling to talk with others; as a result, their language skills are declining.
In conclusion, as children indulge themselves in TV and computer games, poor academic performance, aggressive behaviors and some psychological problems are all the accompanying dreadful consequences. In a nutshell, long-term exposure to TV and computer games may have negative effects on children’s mental abilities.
