Tom: Welcome to Darker Sussex!
Rachel: Tom. You really are here.
Tom: I said I’d be on the platform to meet you, so…shall we? I thought we might walk in the countryside, through the fields. There’s not much more we can do, we’ve only got an hour or so. (pause) You look lovely in the countryside. Suits you.
Rachel: It’s the same me wherever I am. At least I think so.
Tom: Am I allowed to…hold your hand?
Rachel: I can do with my hands exactly as I wish. Here.
Tom: Pretty. Long fingers. My lady of the long fingers, walking by the street.
Rachel: When I was young, we used to walk on stepping stones across the street near where I lived. We were challenged not to fall in.
Tom: Did you ever?
Rachel: Once. I had to wait until my clothes dried before I went home.
Tom: Ah, I can imagine a small girl in wet clothes. Did you cry?
Rachel: No, why would I cry? What would be the point?
Tom: People cry for all sorts of reasons - shock, distress…
Rachel: I was more concerned with not getting into trouble.
Tom: I can see you don’t like being to blame.
Rachel: Or being blamed.
Tom: There’s a defiant spirit about you, Rachel. Somewhere, you want to challenge the world.
Rachel: Don’t you? With your soaring architecture challenging the sky?
Tom: Oh, architecture’s much more down to earth. Engineering with decor, really. (pause) Look over there. Let’s’ take that path, through the meadow.
[music]
Tom: Here, Rachel…(sighs) flowers in your hair…
Rachel: (laughs)
Tom: You look like…my love. My fairy love.
Rachel: Oh…(laughs) you never told me you’d say embarrassing things to me. I actually like it.
Tom: Then I shall say lots more.
Rachel: Well, that’s not what I meant. I think I meant not to be so…
Tom: Honest? Not to say what I’m thinking?
Rachel: No, just I may not. It’s just a little…just too much.
Tom: It won’t be, you’ll get used to it.
Rachel: It’s been a wonderful day.
Tom: Mm. It’s been our day.
Rachel: I mean, let’s catch the train back.
Tom: But we’re not going back, are we? We’re going forward.
Rachel: Yes. If that’s what you want. Yes.
